The Astraea Turbo Snail is one of the best aquarium grazers for algae. It has a triangular-shaped shell usually decorated with bright shades of coralline algae.
These wonderful cleaners are totally dependent on a diet of algae. Keep in reef or friendly fish system. Hermit crabs may see the opportunity for a meal with a free shell; best to keep hermit crabs separate. As with all invertebrates, drip acclimate at a slow rate. Keep water parameters constant, and avoid copper-based medications.
Most grazing snails will feed on diatoms, a major group of algae. Generally all established aquariums will support algae. If algae levels are low, algae flakes or strips can be added. Populate your tank with one snail per 10 gallons of water.
