The African Hind Grouper or Leopard Hind Grouper is one of the smallest groupers and a favorite for marine aquariums. The camouflaged body is shaded white to red with pronounced spotting around the head. The black eyespot at the tail suggests a protection mechanism in which larger predators will strike at the tail thinking it’s the head, which enables this smaller species of grouper to escape unharmed.
The African Hind Grouper is a compact hardy grouper that does well in captivity. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter. Keep only one per tank in aggressive systems possibly with Triggerfish or Pufferfish. They will eat anything that will fit into their mouth including smaller fish and crustaceans.
