The Sling Jaw Wrasse ranges from the Red Sea to Hawaii and Japan. Juveniles are green to brown with vertical white thin bandsdown the body anda black eye spot on both the dorsal and anal fins. Females are brown to bright yellow. Males have a white head and a dark brown body with visible scale patterns on the body.
In the wild the Sling Jaw will drift with floating plant matter to disguise itself in order to prey on small fish. This behavior is called drift emigration. The Sling Jaw is able to extend its jaws over half its length to retrieve small fish and invertebrates out of small crevices.
If you plan to house the Sling Jaw, have a large tank with ample swimming room. This fish will feed on small fish and invertebrates, so keep with larger aggressive fish. Have lots of good hiding places and thick sandy substrate. As with any member of this species they can jump; make sure you have a snug lid on the aquarium.
The wrasse will consume a wide variety of meaty foods. Feed vitamin enriched frozen and dry foods.
